Hijaz

Scale Origin: Greek.

Scale Type: Heptatonic.

Tuning: Twelve-tone equal temperament.

Styles of Music: Greek folk music.

Transposition: 1 – 3 – 1 – 2 – 1 – 2 – 2.

Features: Hijaz is a very beautiful and distinctive mode, and is immediately recognizable as the fifth mode of the harmonic minor scale i.e. the mode obtained when one adopts the fifth note of the harmonic minor scale as a tonic. The salient feature of Hijaz is the augmented second of the lower tetrachord which relates it to the Hijaz family of Turkish makam. Another way of looking at Hijaz is as a Phrygian mode the third of which has been raised by a semitone. This makes it identical with the Spanish Phrygian mode, or alternatively the popular Klezmer mode Ahavah Rabbah. Hijaz is typically used with chords built on the first, fourth and seventh degrees – very similar to the Spanish Phrygian.
